Andrew Solomon: Intimacy With Humanity

I feel like having been depressed puts me in touch with the suffering that’s at the heart of so much human experience. And in that sense it makes me less alone. I mean, almost ironically. Because one thinks of depression as very isolating. And if I’m in bed and can’t move, it’s pretty isolating. But having been depressed is the opposite of isolating. It’s the basis for whatever intimacy I have with humanity.
